This jacket was to replace the existing M-51 and M-43 field jackets from the Korean War era and World War II respectively. The M-65 field jacket was used throughout the Vietnam War and much after. It was only recently phased out with the introduction of the ECWCS layering system. The M-65 had a number of improvements over the existing field jackets. Among these improvements were the built in stow-away hood which zips into the collar extra pockets shoulder epaulets. The closure buttons were also replaced with a brass zipper to allow soldiers to open and close their jackets more quickly and easily. The detachable liner not included was included to allow dealing with fluctuating temperatures easily.
